NEWS BRIEF

Legends of squash Jonah Barrington, Geoff Hunt and Heather McKay adorn the cover of the 50th anniversary issue of Squash Player. The first Squash Player magazine was published in October 1971 and immediately became the world’s premier squash publication. It has been the main vehicle for the dissemination of squash news for decades and later became the World Squash Federation’s official magazine.

The latest issue reflects the content of the inaugural magazine, republishing the famous cover from 1971, and includes tributes from the great and good of squash, including H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco, Patron of the WSF H.R.H. Tunku Imran and ten-times British Open champion Jahangir Khan. The original squash event promoter, Mike Palmer, joins American correspondent James Zug as a columnist and reflects on the sport’s early professional days. Reproduction of the original content includes a personal message from H.R.H. Prince Philip and the Minister of Sport.

There are features on legends Barrington, Hunt and McKay, who each look back on 50 years in the sport. Experienced WSF official Andrew Shelley, now curator of the World Squash Library, tells the inside story of the development of spectator squash as we know it today. Squash Player photographer Steve Line charts the evolution of sports photography from grainy black and white images to clear colour pictures. String doctor Jon Sharpe explains the development of the heavy wooden rackets of 50 years ago to the lightweight and powerful rackets we have today.

How is our sport faring? Squash Player challenges the sport to ‘Think Outside the Box’ and reveals Marc Thrill’s Wall Squash game, while Mike Dale investigates whether the new Padel craze is a ‘friend or foe’ of squash.

Rodney Martin, the former world champion and a formative influence on the modern game, explains how to go on the offensive; Jesse Engelbrecht details the benefits of a game plan; your tactical errors are clarified; and the latest Workshop news is covered in our Workshop section.

In From The Gallery we reveal the part squash played in Andrew Morton’s sensational book on Princess Diana and what it was like playing squash against the Berlin Wall.

All the usual and popular contributions also appear in this jumbo issue in the Club & Court, Workshop, Gear and On Court sections.
